The Shakeology Cleanse

If you're using Shakeology you may have heard about a cleanse that you can do with it. Here's how to do it, and what my experience was:

It's basically that you drink 3 Shakeology drinks a day. If they are plain (ie just with water) you can add 3 pieces of fruit. Then for dinner you have a salad, unrestricted on veggies, plus 4 oz of lean white protein, with 2 tbsp of a vinegar and oil dressing. Each salad can contain a tablespoon of chia seeds or flaxseed or hempseed, for fatty acids.

You need to drink LOTS of water, 2-4 liters a day. Coffee and tea is OK if you don't add anything to them. NO Recovery Drink, if you're using it. The goal is to promote flushing junk from your system and regulating hydration levels. It’s calorically restricted to be sure. But in its 1000-1200 or so calories will be more nutrients than most people get by eating over twice that amount. The key is caloric efficiency; getting the most nutrients possible out of the fewest number of calories. It's probably best to do during a recovery week since it is so few calories, some people say don't do it in the middle of P90X or Insanity at all, but I guess it's up to you. I did it on a recovery week.

Some people see results in one or two days and it's OK to do it for that shorter period if you wish, but it's not recommended to go longer than 3 days. You might lose weight on it, many people do, but you might not - the point isn't weight loss, it's to cleanse junk out.

Steve Edwards came up with the cleanse, he's a nationally recognized fitness expert who oversees Beachbody's fitness and diet program development, and serves as Fitness Advisor for the Team Beachbody message boards. His original post when he came out with the cleanse is here. http://steve-edwards.blogspot.com/2010/02/shakeology-cleanse.html

Your dinner on the cleanse will look something like my nifty salad here
Day 1 I was on the edge of hunger most of the day, the next shake came just in time... I'd never been so happy to see a dinner salad. In the evening I had a bout of feeling very bad for about an hour, like I wanted to lay down and felt prickly, and had trouble finishing my workout. Maybe it was junk coming out of the system, as the 2nd and 3rd day I did a 180 and had a *ton* of energy and felt great, also not hungry. Elimination seemed somewhat more than what I was taking in. I lost 1.4 pounds, and the energy boost has continued on just with the regular schedule of one shake a day. After 3 days of eating so healthy I really started noticing that unhealthy stuff didn't taste very good - that was starting to happen just following the diet plan, but it felt like a big shift during the cleanse. Overall, it was a good experience and I'm glad I did it. Go here if you want to know more about Shakeology.
